Constant struggle to Hellenism

Stefanos P. Tamvakis was born in Alexandria on 27th of June in 1952. He attended the Averof high school in Alexandria, Egypt and then went to England where he studied Business Administration in Cambridge. Besides his mother tongue he speaks Arabic, English and French. In 1976 he returned to Egypt and took along with his cousin Stephen T. Tamvakis, the family business manufacturing food production under the name «St’George’s» in Alexandria. His involvement to the common started in 1976 when he was elected to the committee of the Charitable Society «Aeschylus – Arion, following the path of his father Paul S. Tamvakis, who was President of the Association.
In 1990 at the age of 38, he was elected chairman of the Greek Community of Alexandria.
In 1995 he was elected vice- president of the Council of Hellenes Abroad, Coordinator Asia – Africa and unanimously re-elected three consecutive times.

During his tenure as Coordinator for the Asia-Africa has developed distribution channels in the oversea region methodically and consistently, promoting and helping to solve their problems.

He leads the development of cohesion of Region Asia – Africa. He organizes the First Regional Congress Asia – Africa in 1996, in Alexandria and two conferences Youth Network SAE Asia – Africa in 1999 in Alexandria and in 2001 in Johannesburg. In collaboration with the Youth, he develops an information network for young people of Greek origin on the African continent.

In 2001 he participates in the mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sudan, which was aiming a fair treatment of prominent expatriates who are unjustly detained in Sudanese prisons.

In December 2001 he was elected Vice President of SAE, and he undertakes to coordinate and develop aspects of the Youth and Education. The main area of responsibility is the development of communication policy of the agency, to publicize the work and activities of SAE to the public in Greece, Cyprus and the Greek Diaspora.

In December 2006 he was elected President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad.

Since January 2009, he is a member of the first Board of Directors Center for Hellenistic Studies in Alexandria, established by joint cooperation of the Library of Alexandria, the Public Benefit Foundation Alexander S. Onassis «Foundation Vardinoyannis and the University of Alexandria.

Vision for the SAE and Hellenism is the extension and preservation of the Greek language and culture, the emergence of a dynamic component of the Greek world, the clustering and involvement of our youth and civic development and economic empowerment of SAE to implement programs and activities for the benefit of Hellenism.
